The Door to Hell gas crater is located in a natural gas field in the central Turkmenistan desert that has been burning continuously since 1971. First lit to stop the spread of methane after the collapse of a Soviet drilling rig, the fire has far outlasted the hours originally predicted, eventually becoming a tourist attraction.
Soil samples taken from the bottom of the crater have been sequenced and currently being analyzed by the MGRG Bioinformatics Group.
